Support for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs)
At WCSF CharitySpirit Foundation, we uphold the belief that disability is not inability. Every individual, regardless of physical, sensory, intellectual, or developmental challenges, has the right to live with dignity, equality, and opportunity. With this belief, WCSF has initiated a dedicated program to support Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) across various districts including Gumla, Simdega, Rourkela, Ranchi, and other adjoining tribal and semi-urban areas.
This program is designed as a holistic support initiative that addresses the multiple layers of exclusion faced by persons with disabilities. It goes beyond charity and aims to create an inclusive ecosystem where PwDs can thrive socially, economically, and emotionally.
The first step of this initiative begins with identification and outreach. WCSF teams, in collaboration with local volunteers, panchayat officials, and healthcare providers, conduct door-to-door disability surveys, helping identify individuals with various forms of disability who are often overlooked in rural and tribal settings. Once identified, these individuals are linked to available government schemes like disability pensions, UDID cards, health insurance, and assistive devices through advocacy and facilitation support.
A major component of the program focuses on assistive support. WCSF, in partnership with district hospitals, CSR partners, and donor networks, organizes distribution camps for aids and appliances, including wheelchairs, crutches, hearing aids, walking sticks, orthotic shoes, and Braille kits. Special camps for health check-ups, physiotherapy, and mental wellness are also organized to ensure comprehensive care.
Understanding the importance of economic empowerment, the program includes skill training and livelihood support for PwDs. Tailored vocational programs—such as handicrafts, stitching, digital training, mobile repairing, and micro-enterprise development—are offered depending on the ability and interest of the individual. Some have gone on to start their own home-based businesses or join local SHGs. WCSF supports these efforts through microfinance linkages, mentorship, and market exposure.
Social inclusion is another key focus. To tackle stigma and promote acceptance, WCSF conducts awareness sessions, inclusive events, and community campaigns highlighting the rights and abilities of persons with disabilities. Schools are encouraged to practice inclusive education, and public events like International Day of Persons with Disabilities are commemorated through rallies, cultural programs, and exhibitions showcasing the talents of PwDs.
A specialized cadre of volunteers, called “Disability Mitras”, has been created in each intervention area to provide ongoing emotional support, community integration, and follow-up assistance to PwDs and their families.
Through this multi-dimensional approach, WCSF is working towards a society where no person is left behind—where people with disabilities are not only supported but are also empowered to lead independent, fulfilling, and respected lives.
“Inclusion is not a favor, it is a right.”
WCSF calls upon all communities, partners, and policymakers to join hands in building a world where abilities matter more than limitations.
